Carmel police shoot and critically injure man on US 31
CARMEL, Ind. (WRTV) — Two Carmel police officers fired at and critically injured an 18-year-old man Thursday night on U.S. 31, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said.
No officers were injured, but the man was taken to a hospital in stable but critical condition.
According to ISP, around 6:30 p.m., a 911 call from a family member of the man alerted police that he was suicidal. Police agencies in the Carmel and Westfield areas then began a search for a truck that the man was driving.
The two Carmel officers found the truck on U.S. 31, just north of 116th Street. Upon their arrival, the man exited the truck and pointed a rifle at the officers. Both officers fired at the man, striking him multiple times, police say.
The man fell to the ground, but police say he continued to ignore instructions.
When it was safely possible, the officers rendered aid to the suspect until medics came.
The southbound lanes of U.S. 31 were closed for more than five hours during the investigation.
Police said both officers and their vehicles were equipped with cameras that were activated during the incident.
The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office was also at the scene. The prosecutor will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
