Man dies after east side shooting involving off-duty Lawrence officer

INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — A man has died following a shooting involving an off-duty Lawrence officer on the east side of Indianapolis Friday night.

The Marion County Coroner identified the man as Lamont Johnson, 53.

Also shot was former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief Bill Benjamin, who now serves as a Lawrence Police Reserve lieutenant.

The shooting happened at a woman’s home in the 1900 block of Kildare Avenue in the East 21st Gardens neighborhood.

Lawrence Deputy Police Chief Travis Cline said Benjamin was meeting with the woman at the home when Johnson arrived and the two exchanged gunfire.

Benjamin was struck in the ankle. Johnson was shot in the chest.

Benjamin was reported in stable condition Friday night. Johnson was critical at the time of transport.

Medics and IMPD were called just after 10:10 p.m. to the area. Officers initially responded to the 1900 block of Dequincy Street before being redirected to Kildare Avenue.

It remains unclear if anyone is in custody. IMPD is leading the investigation.
