KARA KENNEY

Kara Kenney is an investigative reporter at WRTV and a member of Indiana’s I-Team, Circle City Broadcasting’s investigative journalism unit. She brings more than 25 years of journalism experience to the team, including 19 years serving viewers in Indiana.

Kara’s investigative reporting focuses on government accountability, public safety and consumer issues. Her investigations into government fraud and waste have resulted in several changes to Indiana law, including greater accountability for how schools report bullying incidents, requirements for radon testing in schools and increased transparency in school superintendent contracts.

Her work has earned 19 Emmy Awards, the Richard H. Driehaus Investigative Award from the Better Government Association, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and numerous honors from the Associated Press, Indiana Broadcasters Association and Society of Professional Journalists. She was named Indiana’s Best Reporter by the Associated Press in 2018 and Journalist of the Year by the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists in 2012.

Kara has also received a Journalist of the Year Award from the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association and the Indiana Judges Association Media Award for her “Attorney Shortage” series.

Before joining WRTV, Kara worked as an investigative reporter for WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Florida, where she contributed to the station’s “Tracking Your Tax Dollars” series. Earlier in her career, she worked at WSJV-TV in South Bend, Indiana, and WAOW-TV in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Kara is a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Journalism. She gives back to the community through several organizations, including the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists board and her neighborhood Crime Stoppers organization.

Outside of work, Kara enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters.
