Federal government awards Indiana $26 million for flood damage repairs

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WRTV) — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration announced Friday it is sending Indiana $26 million in emergency relief funding to repair roads and bridges damaged by flooding, according to a press release.

The release said the funds will help expedite INDOT’s work on the collapsed Hazel Dell Parkway bridge in Carmel and repairs on I-70, State Road 38 and multiple bridges in Wayne County that were severely damaged during this month’s severe storms.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said his department is “committed to ensuring the state has the federal resources it needs to rebuild.”

“Our hearts go out to the families across Indiana that were devastated by extreme flooding,” his statement continued. “We’re moving this emergency funding immediately to help the state reopen vital transportation links that residents rely on.”

Hazel Dell, the statement said, sees annual daily traffic of over 10,000.

The Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief program sends funding to states, territories, tribes and federal land management agencies for highways and bridges damaged by natural disasters or catastrophic events, the release said.
