New Colts WR Keenan Allen excited to be back with Shane Steichen

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Keenan Allen officially signed with the Colts on Wednesday and is out at the team’s joint practice with the Falcons, but he is not participating on Wednesday. He said is just chilling on Wednesday and Thursday he will “really go.”

Joining the Colts means a reunion for Allen with Colts head coach Shane Steichen. Allen and Steichen were both with the Chargers from 2014-2020.

Allen shared what impresses him about Steichen.

“Just the way he runs things,” Allen said. “He’s a genius in itself. He knows the game. He knows the ins and outs. The way that he knows the game, I know the game as well. That’s how I was raised in the NFL world.”

Steichen said that Allen will take part in some individual drills on Thursday. He added that he will not play in the preseason game on Saturday, and they will really get Allen going next week.

“He is the most cerebral receiver I have ever been around,” Steichen said. “He sees the game like a quarterback, how to run routes, how to attack leverage, how he sees coverage.”

His quarterback is excited to throw the ball to him as well.

“Ya, it’s great. I’m excited to add Keenan to the group. We’ve got a lot of really good playmakers in that room. Guys who can do different things and bring different skillsets. It’ll be great to have him. Obviously a guy that’s played at the top of the league for a really long time now. Brings a ton of experience and knows how to get open. Played at a really high level last year. I know he’s got familiarity with this scheme and being with Shane in the past, so really looking forward to getting going with him.”

Allen is a 13-year NFL veteran. He has over 1,000 catches for over 12,000 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career. Last season with the Chargers, Allen had 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns.
