The driver of the Camaro was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say preliminary investigations indicate the Camaro was traveling north at a high rate of speed and briefly became airborne while crossing E. Not just one of us, all of us," Rick Whitlock, who lives in Mooresville, said.

It was saddening, obviously we lost one of our veterans, Johnny May, Sgt. of Arms of the Legionnaires at American Legion Post 103, added.

Outside the American Legion Post in Mooresville, flags flew at half-staff in honor of Captain Seth Koval.

I was asked by some of the members to bring it down to half staff," May explained. "'Cause thats what we do [when we lose someone].

Koval was a Mooresville native and Air Force Captain. According to a bio provided by the Ohio Air National Guard, Koval was an instructor pilot for the 116th Air Refueling Squadron. He trained pilots in air refueling, aeromedical, cargo and passenger operations.

He was killed in an aerial refueling tanker crash in Iraq on Thursday.

Theres a lot of things happening in this world that shouldnt, and that was one of them," Whitlock said.

Whitlock has lived in Mooresville for nearly 20 years.

I love my community here, I love the people, and we are here for the veterans," he explained. "And when we find out one of our veterans was in that crash - it devastated all of us.

Its a little deeper," May said. "We know the family will need help.

The 38-year-old served in the military for 19 years. According to the Air Force, Captain Koval was a Purdue graduate with a degree in aviation operations. This was his fifth deployment overseas. He was serving with the 121st air refueling wing bases in Columbus, Ohio.

Koval, along with two other service members involved in the crash, Captain Curtis J. Angst, 30, of Wilmington, Ohio and Tech. Sergeant Tyler H. Simmons, 28, of Columbus, Ohio, was assigned to the 121st Air Refueling Wing at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus, Ohio, before they died.

These airmen were more than just uniforms they wore, they were our teammates, our friends. Mentors who helped make the organization stronger every day," Chief Master Sgt. Edward N. Taylor III, Ohio Air National Guard State Command Chief, stated.

Theyre valued members of our team," Major Gen. David B. Johnson, assistant adjutant general for Air with the Ohio National Guard, said. "And their loss is deeply felt across the 121st Air Refueling Wing and the entire Ohio National Guard.

Koval's wife, Heather, released a statement from their family on Facebook on Saturday.

It said in part:
Seth was exceptional in everything he did. He was truly the most amazing husband, father, son, brother, friend, and Airman. He loved what he did, and he was proud to put his uniform on and serve others. He grew up dreaming about becoming a pilot and to stand beside him as he made his dreams come true was an honor.
A GoFundMe has also been created to help support the family. If you would like to donate, you can find it here.

For the Mooresville community, they're just hoping to help in any way they can.

As a community and the club, wed like to help the family out," May said. "Im sure the auxiliaries and the SAO and the Legionnaires are gonna try to do something to get something to that family.

Our community will come together after something like this," Whitlock stated. "Because if one goes down, we all go down too.

A report from The Associated Press indicates the crash involved a KC-135 refueling aircraft staffed by the six decedents. The aircraft crashed while supporting U.S. military operations in Iran.

U.S. Central Command has indicated that the crash was the result of an unspecified incident involving two aircraft in friendly airspace. Per the AP, the other plane involved in the incident landed safely.

The DoW reported that its investigation of the crash is still ongoing.

The full statement from the Koval family can be seen below:
Our world was shattered two days ago. There is nothing that can prepare you to receive news that youve lost the love of your life. Our family will never be the same. As we figure out how to pick up the pieces and move forward, we are deeply grateful for the love and support we have received. That support, and the help of our Heavenly Father, will hold us together in these fragile moments as we face a reality without him. Seth was a man whose life I could never confine to a single statement and whose loss will echo in my heart forever. My husband was many things - loving, generous, kind-hearted, smart, devoted, a fixer of all things, a real outdoorsman, and selfless. The most important thing about my husband was that Jesus was his Lord and Savior. He always put others before himself until the very end. I will see him in the smile of our son and carry him with me in every moment. I have overwhelming hope and peace because he is with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please help us honor Seth by respecting our wishes for privacy during this devastating time.

Casey Zanowic
is the In Your Community reporter for North Side Indy. Most would call that a win-win.

Andersons One Battle After Another is the favorite heading into the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. But Cooglers Sinners comes in the lead nominee with a record 16 nominations. Both filmmakers are poised to leave with their first Oscar.

RELATED STORY | 'Sinners' shatters Oscar record with 16 nominations, making history

But little else is assured at an Academy Awards where Michael B. Jordan or Timothe Chalamet (despite the ballet diss heard 'round the world) could win their first Academy Award in a too-close-to-call best actor race.
How to watch and stream the Oscars and red carpet
The telecast will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern. (YouTube will be the new home of the Oscars beginning in 2029.) The official red carpet preshow begins on ABC and Hulu at 6:30 p.m. EDT, while E! will kick off its red-carpet broadcast at 4 p.m.
What to expect from the 2026 Oscars
Conan OBrien is returning as host for the second year in a row. Despite the war in Iran and expanding geopolitical turmoil, OBrien has pledged an entertaining show in the mold of hosts like Bob Hope and Johnny Carson. Lets have fun with it, is my attitude, OBrien told reporters earlier in the week.

Still, the already high security will be even greater this year at an Oscars, taking place two weeks after the United States and President Donald Trump launched the war with Iran.

Of course, every year we monitor whats going on in the world, Raj Kapoor, executive producer of the show, said earlier in the week. We have the support of the FBI and the LAPD, and its a close collaboration.

Two of the five best song nominees will be performed: I Lied to You, from Sinners, with Miles Caton, Raphael Saadiq and others; and Golden from KPop Demon Hunters.
Theatrical looks to best streaming, again
KPop Demon Hunters, a Sony Pictures production that was sold to Netflix, was the most-watched movie of 2025. (It has 325 million views and counting, making it Netflix's most-streamed movie ever.) But it seems all but certain that the nights final award wont go to a streaming release; Apple's CODA remains the only streaming film to achieve that. Instead best picture is likely to go to an anomaly in todays movie industry: big-budget original films from a personal vision.

Sinners and One Battle After Another were both theatrical releases shot on film. And both came from Warner Bros., the legacy studio thats agreed to merge with David Ellisons new media colossus, Paramount Skydance. The $111 billion deal, which awaits regulatory approval, has rattled an industry already reconciling itself to the acquisitions of MGM (by Amazon) and 20th Century Fox (by The Walt Disney Co.).

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | 'Hamnet' and 'One Battle After Another' take top honors at Golden Globes

Elegy may mark Sundays Oscars. The in memoriam segment is expected to include, among many others, remembrances of Robert Redford, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall. OBrien, who had hosted a party attended by Rob and Michele Reiner the night before their deaths, has promised a very powerful tribute.

New this year is a best casting category. Another innovation is a requirement that Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members watch all nominees before voting. On the academys streaming platform even Oscar voting is streamed voters had to check a box attesting to having watched each nominee before voting in a category.
Few sure things in the acting categories
Whether those changes will have any effect on some of the nights closest races remains to be seen. Coming into the show, best actor is one of the most hard-to-call categories. Chalamet had been seen as the front-runner for his performance in Marty Supreme. But a swaggering meta campaign, that drew headlines, of all things, a perceived slight of ballet and opera, may have helped put Jordan into the lead. (In Chalamet's favor, the uproar only started as voting was ending.)

While Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) is widely expecting to win best actress, a first for Irish performers, the supporting categories are highly competitive. Amy Madigan (Weapons) is the slight favorite in best supporting actress, but Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) and Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners) are in the mix, too.

RELATED STORY | Movie tickets cost how much? Here's how to stop overpaying

Despite almost no campaigning, Penn is viewed as the best supporting actor favorite. That award, could easily also go to Stellan Skarsgrd (Sentimental Value) or Delroy Lindo (Sinners).

Though the Oscars often feel largely removed from their times, a crop of nominees that explicitly grapple with the current political moment will be center stage. That includes not just One Battle After Another, which opens with a raid on an immigration detention facility, but movies like Kleber Mendona Filhos Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent and Jafar Panahis Iranian revenge drama It Was Just an Accident.

The war in Iran has particular meaning to Panahi, whose film is nominated for best international feature and for best screenplay. The esteemed Iranian filmmaker and last year's Palme d'Or winner has made films clandestinely in his native Iran despite repeated imprisonment, travel ban and even home arrest. While promoting the film, Panahi was sentenced to a year in prison. At least one of his cowriter nominees, Mehdi Mahmoudian, was unable to leave Iran to attend Sundays awards.

Twenty three years ago, the Academy Awards were also held amid war in the Middle East. The 2003 Oscars took place just three days before the Iraq War began. Many in Hollywood protested the war. Chicago won best picture.

The White House has said that Trump will travel to China from March 31 to April 2, though Beijing has not officially confirmed it.

Bessent said on Thursday that his team will continue to deliver results that put America's farmers, workers and businesses first. It will come five months after the two leaders met in the South Korean city of Busan and agreed to a one-year truce in a trade war that temporarily saw tit-for-tat tariffs soar to triple digits before the two sides climbed down.

Still, trade remains a source of tensions. The commerce ministry on Friday hit back against the Trump administrations new trade investigation into 16 trading partners, including China. The investigation which came after a Supreme Court ruling struck down Trumps sweeping global tariffs that were imposed last year could pave the way for new tariffs.

Another issue that could be discussed is the Iran war, especially when global anxiety is soaring over oil prices and supplies. We're not opposed to jobs," Lou Ann Baker, the chairwoman of the Eagle Creek Advisory Committee, said. "What we're concerned about is that those efforts may penalize Eagle Creek Park. And that's where we'd like to see some compromise and some change."

The protest followed Monday night's vote by the Lebanon City Council to approve a water use agreement for the LEAP District.

The agreement would allow 25 million gallons of water to be drawn daily for the project, some of it from Eagle Creek itself. Wastewater from the project would then be recycled back into Eagle Creek.

Marty Risch, a retired scientist and hydrologist of 40 years, said the change in water flow patterns could harm local wildlife and ecosystems.

"Imagine you know water coming out of a sewer pipe in the winter when everything's frozen. That's not the pattern that these wildlife for sure have become dependent upon," Risch explained. "This will be an alteration of an ecosystem that doesn't look to be a positive one."

Residents from both Lebanon and Indianapolis are calling not only for an end to the project, but also for greater transparency around the now-approved water use agreement if the project moves forward.

Baker raised concerns about a specific clause added in the agreement that was passed Monday night.

"Of particular concern is a clause that said if and when they need more water for that project in that city, they will ask citizens for additional water, or another source. That comment, that line is directly in conflict with what has been represented to us publicly and privately here in Indianapolis in regards to the park, in regards to the rest of the public water supply here in Indianapolis, that's concerning," Baker said.

WRTV will keep you updated as we hear new updates about the project.

__

Dispatch received a 911 call from a man who said he had shot his wife.

While making their way to the scene, officers learned that a four-year-old girl was also inside the residence.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the child and safely removed her from the residence. During this time, officials say they heard a single gunshot from inside. Responding officers then found a man and woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Despite life-saving efforts, both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials say the child was not physically harmed, but she was taken to a hospital in Mooresville for observation. The child was reunited with her nine-year-old sister, who was in school at the time of the incident. The children are being cared for by the Department of Child Services.

This is a devastating and unnecessary situation that has left a family ripped apart, stated Sheriff Richard Myers in a press release. "However, I want to commend the quick and decisive actions by the first responding officers that successfully removed the four-year-old child from an extremely dangerous and possible deadly situation.

An investigation into this incident is ongoing. In school, you might have used it to calculate the area of a circle or the volume of a cylinder. But the applications of pi are endless and part of every corner of our world.

The holiday was created in 1988 by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco.

He had a very open and expansive view of the world and saw an opportunity with this number, mathematical concept, to invite people into the joy of mathematical learning, said Sam Sharkland, program director of public programs at the museum, who worked with Shaw before he died in 2017.

While it began as a small staff celebration featuring pie, it soon turned into a grand procession where hundreds of visitors marched around the pi shrine, each carrying a digit. Attendees often show up early to claim their favorite digit for the parade. One woman who has the symbol tattooed on her neck comes every year and marches near the front with a pi flag, Sharkland said.

RELATED STORY | 10 fascinating things to know about pi on Pi Day

The celebration begins at 1:59 p.m., signifying the next three digits of pi.

Here are a few ways pi is being used on the cutting edge of science.
Pi in outer space
In Artur Davoyan's field of mechanical and aerospace engineering, pi is so fundamental that it would be hard to pinpoint one use case for it, he said.

Pi is part of literally every single formula that you would use to do any calculation, like for spacecraft motion, for materials and how they work, or propulsion systems, said Davoyan, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Anything that is round or has cyclical or repeating properties such as radio waves involves pi. Even squares or irregular blobs can be broken down into a series of progressively smaller circles and calculated using pi, Davoyan said.

Davoyan's research looks at how to create new propulsion systems to send spacecrafts more quickly to the far reaches of the solar system to gather and send back information to Earth. He pointed to NASAs Voyager 1 and 2, which launched in 1977 but didn't reach interstellar space until 2012 and 2018.

To send a signal to those space probes, NASA must calculate Earth's exact position in orbit around the sun and design antennas for communication using pi. Then scientists use pi once more when receiving and breaking down complex signals that are being beamed back to Earth.

Say aliens send something to us, something that we dont know how to deal with, Davoyan said. So the very first thing that you would do, you would try to split it into simple functions... and turns out that when you do this operation, you will naturally have pis in it.
Tiny droplets of pi
Pi also comes up frequently when studying small amounts of fluids.

Dino Di Carlo, chair of the bioengineering department at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, conducts research that involves creating little particles out of polymers that act as tiny test tubes for cells. This is used as an important tool to examine cells closely and learn about their functions and what's inside them.

The pi constant is used in calculating how to form those droplets, surface tension calculations that define how droplets can break up, and how researchers can control the size of those volumes, Di Carlo said.

Di Carlo is using this technique to find antibodies small proteins that fight diseases in your body that could block signals put out by cancer cells.

Pi is also an important part of calculations when looking at how liquids flow through tubes and barriers. One example is when the fluid sample slowly flows sideways in a take-home COVID-19 test.

Di Carlo used these properties to devise a new test for Lyme disease that can be completed in 20 minutes, rather than days or weeks like previously.

As an engineer and scientist, (pi) is just a part of life, Di Carlo said. Maybe Ive taken it for granted.

The development is located within the Indy Health District, a nonprofit focused on improving access to housing, healthy food and workforce development.

Jamal Smith, executive director of the Indy Health District, said the project reflects what residents in the area have been asking for.

"We have heard on a number of occasions their desire to develop, invest in that area, in addition to the request for additional home ownership opportunities, affordable home ownership and housing opportunities," Smith said.

Smith said affordability is a central commitment tied to the project's funding.

"We have some grant dollars tied into the project in exchange for their commitment to making sure that there's an affordability mix tied into the district so that affordability stays at the forefront of it," Smith said.

The corner has a long history as a commercial hub. Longtime residents remember it as a busy stretch lined with minority-owned businesses, restaurants and shops.

"The neighborhood used to be thriving. The corner was really thriving. You had a Subway on that side of the street, plus you had soul food restaurants. You had minority businesses," Indianapolis resident Kevin Williams said.

Marvin Taylor, who has been a barber in the area for 30 years and opened All in the Wrists Barbershop 10 years ago, said the buildings have been a problem for the surrounding community for years.

"When I got here in 2016, the buildings were dilapidated," Taylor said. "There's been a lot of things going on over there, just, you know, the unsheltered and things like that. So it's been an eyesore and a hindrance for business for a very long time."

Taylor remembers when the corner was far more active.

"There was a beauty shop. There was a place called 360 Style," Taylor said.

While Taylor is hopeful the new development will bring more foot traffic and business to the area, he also has concerns about what growth could mean for small business owners like himself.

"One of my concerns is with the upcoming construction: will my rent be raised? Will some of the prices for rent for people, small business owners in this area, will we be forced out because of some of the upcoming changes? But if I'm able to stay here, absolutely, I think this is going to be great for the neighborhood," Taylor said.

M-22 is one of several housing developments spearheaded by the Near North Development Corporation and the Indy Health District. A nearby project at 22nd and Illinois Street will add 26 affordable homes, including a mix of townhomes and duplexes.

We just recently came back off of a 43-day shutdown and are now having to go through it again. Today marks the 28th day without pay," Smith said.

He told WRTV his officers are still paying catch up on missed bills from the first shutdown. Since then, they've only had six pay periods.

Smith said six officers have quit at Indianapolis International Airport since the first government shutdown in the fall.

On Thursday, about a dozen called out sick.

"It does put a strain on things. We are lucky that we aren't as big of an airport," Smith said.

In Indianapolis, TSA anticipates approximately 623,000 passengers will be departing out of the airport between March 10 and April 13 for both Spring Break and the NCAA tournament.

The staffing shortages have already caused major disruptions at larger airports across the country, with wait times of three and four hours reported at locations like Hobby and JFK.

WRTV put wait times to the test with two spring break travelers. We asked the travelers to start their stop watches on their phones to time how long it took them to get through security. It took Justin over 18 and a half minutes. Mel came in at just over 13 minutes.

Keep in mind, this may not be the case for every traveler.

Mel Goldstein, who was traveling to Miami for spring break, said she and her college roomates were already anticipated longer wait times.

"My roommates and I were just talking like, 'Okay, we have to plan ahead because we have to get to the airport earlier,'" Goldstein said.

Smith said wait times in Indianapolis are still relatively typical during Spring Break but warned that could change.

"Throughout the day we will have our little pushes here and there," Smith said.

He is urging travelers to arrive early.

"I could definitely say start getting here those two hours early," Smith said.

And if the shutdown drags on, Smith said the impact on travelers could get worse.

"The more people that either quit or call out, it will start to increase our wait times," Smith said.

Despite the hardship, Smith said many of his officers remain committed.

"If we're here, we want to be here. We just want our pay," Smith said.

He also had a message for travelers passing through.

"A little bit of extra kindness as you guys are coming through," Smith said.

TSA says about 300 officers nationwide have left the agency since the current shutdown began.

If you are traveling over spring break, officials recommend arriving at the airport, including Indianapolis, at least two hours early.

Wait times can vary depending on where you are flying from.

The busiest days for Spring Break 2026 are anticipated to be:

March 12 16

March 20 23

March 27 30

April 2 7

April 13

The busiest time of day during these dates will be between 4 a.m. 8 a.m.
