INDIANAPOLIS -- A police shooting on the south side whit week left a suspect in the hospital and two more IMPD officers temporarily off the street.
As of Friday, 19 IMPD officers were off patrol duties while the department conducts investigations into shootings they were involved in.

The investigations are standard operating procedure – but having so many officers off the streets is having an impact on the department.
"Every time an officer discharges their weapon, the prosecutor's office takes a look at that," said IMPD Major Richard Riddle.
It's a process that takes time – time for prosecutors, time for the detectives from IMPD investigating the case as a whole, and time for internal affairs investigators to look specifically at the officers' use of force.

IMPD says it's compensating for the on-leave officers by paying out more overtime.
Sixteen of the 19 officers currently on leave stem from the pursuit and fatal shooting of a suspect on July 25. An officer was also shot, but not critically injured, in that case.
