INDIANAPOLIS -- A young mother-to-be just weeks away from her due date escaped without serious injury Wednesday from a hit-and-run crash on the near north side.
The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of 30th Street and Guilford Avenue.
Ta-Lesa Thomas, 21, says she was a passenger in a 2004 Mazda driven by her friend, 20-year-old Kamri Gibbs, when a man in a white Nissan crashed into them.
Thomas, who is nine months pregnant with her first child, says the crash was one of her worst nightmares.
"My main concern and focus was my baby," she said. "The only thoughts I had at that moment were, 'I hope he's fine. I hope he's fine.' It happened so fast … but I did feel him move shortly after, and immediately gained relief."
Thomas was taken to Community East Hospital, where doctors determined neither she nor her baby was seriously injured. The driver, Gibbs, also escaped without serious injury.
Thomas said the other driver drove off immediately after the crash, preventing her from seeing anything else about the vehicle.
The young mom-to-be says her due date is December 29. She plans to name the boy DaKoby.
