Greencastle man gets 55 years for 2024 murder at Indianapolis gas station

INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 55 years in a state prison after pleading guilty to murder, armed robbery, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Chad Luis Martin, of Greencastle, pleaded guilty to the April 2024 killing of Shane Coffman, 51, during a carjacking, along with armed robbery and OWI charges from separate cases. Martin was sentenced Monday in Marion Superior Court 27.

The sentence breakdown includes 45 years for murder, nine years for armed robbery, and one year for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The killing happened just before 2:30 p.m. April 29, 2024, at a gas station in the 2700 block of English Avenue. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a carjacking report and found Coffman on the ground with several injuries. First responders took Coffman to a hospital, where he died.

Officers learned the car had been stolen during the incident. Speedway police later found the vehicle in the 1000 block of Holt Road and arrested Martin.

Detective Anthony Johnson with the IMPD homicide office led the investigation.

Shortly after the shooting, Coffman’s wife, Julie, described her husband of 22 years as a peacemaker and a dedicated father of seven.
