Man charged after firing shots at random, almost hitting dogwalker at Westfield apartments

Prosecutors have filed charges against a man accused in a domestic battery and separate shots-fired incident at a Westfield apartment complex Sunday night.

Initial 911 calls came into dispatch around 7:39 p.m. Sunday, with callers reporting a man was randomly firing shots around Casey Acres Apartments and had shot toward another male walking his dogs.

That apartment complex is in the area of West 176th Street and Ditch Road.

Police arrived and quickly located the suspect, identified as John King II. King reportedly had a Glock 43 handgun in his possession when taken into custody.

When later speaking with detectives, King said he’d been upset after fighting with his girlfriend at a nearby apartment. Police say King also admitted to firing his gun and emptying the magazine.

Officers spoke with the girlfriend, as well. She reported to police that King “battered and strangled” her before the shooting.

The girlfriend was taken to a hospital for treatment.

King was being held at the Hamilton County jail. Online court records show he faces the following charges:

• Criminal recklessness where defendant shoots into an inhabited building
• Criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon
• Domestic battery committed in the presence of a child under 16
• Strangulation
• Minor consuming alcohol

The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on official charges.
