GREENWOOD — Amazon is hiring more than 1,000 people for its new fulfillment center in Greenwood.
"At this facility, employees will play integral roles within Amazon’s customer fulfillment operations – everything from receiving inventory, picking and shipping customer orders, and supporting network logistics," the company said in a press release.
Amazon employees hired full-time will be paid at least $15 per hour with benefits including healthcare, 401K with a 50 percent match, up to 20 weeks paid parental leave and tuition for courses in high-demand fields as part of the company's Career Choice program.
The new redistribution center cost $80 million to build and is located at the Worthsville Road exit off I 65 on the south side of Greenwood. Amazon spokesman Andre Woodson says the facility is expected to open this fall, although a firm date has not been set.
Why Greenwood? "We're responding to customer demand and we want to make sure these fulfillment centers are close to customers so we can offer great Prime services and fast shipping speeds," said Woodson.
Amazon has a number of fulfillment centers in central Indiana. When the Greenwood facility opens, Woodson says the company will have about 4,500 employees in the region.
