LEBANON, Ind. -- Police have launched an investigation into the former treasurer for the Humane Society of Boone County.
Humane Society for Boone County President Mike Hancock released a statement Wednesday saying the organization had uncovered alleged "misconduct" by former treasurer Melinna Schuppe.
According to the release, Schuppe was arrested in April on drug charges, at which point she was asked to resigned from the Humane Society's board.
An audit by the new treasurer subsequently uncovered "discrepancies" in Schuppe's ledgers.
"New policies were promptly implemented to close gaps that he been exploited in order to ensure this never happens again," Hancock said in his statement. "Our board members are passionate about our mission. We all work very hard every day – on our own time and for no pay – to be advocates for the voiceless, abandoned, unwanted and neglected animals of Boone County. We take our mission very seriously and nothing is more important to us than protecting the donations from our generous donors who support us and help us in our mission."
The Boone County Sheriff's Office also released a statement Wednesday saying they were pursuing an investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds from the Humane Society for Boone County.
As of Wednesday, no charges had been filed.
