BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- After receiving a stolen truck, employees at a car dealership in Boone County came up with an idea to turn something bad into something helpful for those in Texas.
The truck was towed to Gene Lewis Ford after police determined it was stolen from Houston.
The owner said he’d pay to have the truck towed back – but Gene Lewis Ford owner Steve Lewis decided they weren’t going to send it back empty.
So the car dealership launched a collection drive to fill the stolen truck.
“We have bags of toiletries, people have made travel kits,” said Lewis. “People are frustrated. If you’re not there, but you want to help and you don’t know how to do it – yeah you can give to the Red Cross and that’s good – but it makes people feel good that they have a vehicle to help.”
Receptionist Nikki Downs posted about the dealership’s effort to their Facebook page and it didn’t take long before the truck started filling up.
Gene Lewis Ford employees are collecting everything from bottled water to toothbrushes but they say gift cards could be especially helpful for those impacted by Harvey.
You can drop off donations during normal business hours through next Wednesday when the truck will be loaded onto a flat bed and towed back to Texas.
