INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis Police Department officer was injured after a suspected drunk driver slammed into his cruiser while he was responding to help a stranded driver.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department PIO Genae Cook says the officer was slowing down near the intersection of Raceway Road and Washington Street to help a driver who had gone off the road when he saw a vehicle cross the center line toward him from the opposite direction. The officer tried to swerve but was unable to avoid the collision.

The driver and the officer were both taken to the hospital. The driver was in serious condition and the officer suffered minor injuries.

A blood test on the driver later confirmed that he was over the legal limit. He has not officially been charged at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
