Explosion and large fire erupt at New Castle scrapyard

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (WRTV) — Firefighters on Friday morning responded to an explosion and large fire at a scrapyard south of downtown New Castle.

Photos from the New Castle Fire Department showed smoke billowing into a partly cloudy sky from Neal Scrap Metals, 1711 I Ave.

Reports of the fire came in at 8:45 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported.

The fire department said in a Facebook post that it used an estimated 10,000 gallons of water to bring the fire under control, using a tanker from another fire department to bring additional water to the scene.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Investigators were expected to examine the scene once it was deemed safe.

New Castle, a Henry County city of nearly 17,400 residents, is about an hour’s drive east of downtown Indianapolis.
