Music, PE, theater Indianapolis Public Schools teachers could be laid off this fall

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- As many as 26 Indianapolis Public Schools teachers and counselors could be without a job this fall.

The positions that could be eliminated include PE, music, Latin, theatre, and "English as a second language."

The eliminations would be less than 1 percent of the total IPS staff. If all 26 layoffs go through, IPS would save about $1.7 million.

IPS also said it does not plan to cut fine arts or physical education for students. The eliminated positions would be a surplus from closing three schools.

The following positions could be eliminated:

  • Counselors (5)
  • Music (6)
  • PE (8)
  • Media Specialists (2)
  • Latin (1)
  • ELA (3)
  • Theatre (1)

IPS released the following statement:

“Indianapolis Public Schools is committed to ensuring that our students are led by high quality professionals. It is our desire to operate in an efficient, fiscally responsible manner. Based on projected revenues and expenditures, it is necessary to reduce the number of positions in the school corporation. The district has done a lot of great work to ensure that a small percentage of our teaching force is impacted. A reduction in force is never an easy process, which is ongoing as we prepare for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.”
