MUNCIE, Ind. – An elementary school in Muncie reopened Monday after a problem with the building's heating system.

Last week, three of the nine heating units at East Washington Academy stopped working, but one was repaired the same day. The second unit was fixed using parts from another unit that will ultimately need to be replaced according to school officials.

Space heaters were placed in classrooms and students were encouraged to wear sweatshirts or long sleeves.

A temperature of 68 degrees is required to hold classes, but on Thursday and Friday the building wasn't warm enough, so classes were canceled.

The School Board of Trustees will wait for recommendations from the Facilities Committee and a decision from the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board to hold a public meeting on the future of Muncie Community Schools facilities.
