Neighbors there when needed for Center Grove mom

INDIANAPOLIS -- Center Grove's Laura Deskins knows the meaning of a full plate.

A single mother, Deskins also takes care of her ailing mother, and her daughter Hannah, who has cerebral palsy.

Hannah is completely dependent upon her mom to clothe her, clean her and feed her. The job pays in love and appreciation, but not money.

"We're very low income," Deskins said. "We're OK with that as long as we can provide everything we need."

When neighbor Bill Smith came over for a recent visit, he saw some of those needs weren't being met. The home's only shower is leaking into the basement. Previous patch jobs were not holding. And mold is growing on the walls and floor.

The home's handicap ramp is also worn out from years of use.

"You could start to see the rails were pushing out, the wood was rotten and it had lived its life," Smith said.

Like good neighbors, Smith and his wife Jenny were there. They used several hundred dollars of their own money to build a new, safer ramp. They also called on the VFW from New Whiteland and Greenwood to help them raise money for a replacement shower.

For Deskin, it helps make the plate a little lighter.

"I just can't thank them enough," she said.
