INDIANAPOLIS -- The weather hasn’t been ideal for getting them ready, but crews setting up for the Donato’s Downtown Freedom Blast pushed through.
Zambelli Fireworks, founded in Italy and now headquartered near Pittsburgh, puts on the show in downtown Indy each year. Pyrotechs worked inside the Regions Bank Tower while the rain fell – fireworks on the roof of the tower covered by tarps until the sun comes out.
The Freedom Blast is one of only a few fireworks displays in the world shot from the top of a skyscraper. “When we first started doing this we carried up everything in one day and hand-fired it and now we take it up about four days in advance and preload everything and it's all fired electrically,” said John Maxwell with Zambelli Fireworks.
Maxwell had no spoilers for this year’s show, which takes place around 10:00 p.m. on Monday, but he said it will differ from last year’s and feature a surprise finish. Activities on the grounds of the Indiana War Memorial begin at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th of July.
