WESTFIELD — Westfield police have caught an armed suspect who fired at officers following a pursuit on Tuesday.

At 4:45 p.m., the West Police Department confirmed on social media that “The suspect is in custody and there is no longer a threat to the public.”

According to police, the incident happened in the vicinity of 196th Street and US 31.

Police said an attempted traffic stop escalated into a brief pursuit, during which the suspect, a 25-year-old male from Indianapolis, crashed his vehicle. After exiting the car, he fired several shots at officers and then fled on foot. No officers were injured during the incident.

As a precaution, residents and businesses in the area were advised to remain indoors and secure their properties.

At approximately 4:29 p.m., search teams located the suspect in a nearby field. He was taken into custody without and was found to have a handgun at the time of his arrest.

The suspect was transported to Hamilton County Jail and booked on the following preliminary charges:

• Attempted Murder

• Resisting Law Enforcement

• Pointing a Firearm

• Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun with a Felony Conviction

• Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon

• Intimidation

• Driving While Suspended
