Makayla Timpson’s career-high game helps Fever continue winning ways
INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — The Fever picked up their fourth straight win on Sunday in overtime against the Atlanta Dream.
A key contributor in the Fever’s comeback win was second-year forward Makayla Timpson. She had a career-high 20 points, scoring six of the Fever’s 14 points in overtime as well.
Plus, she had a career-day in her home state of Georgia.
“I got a lot of people in the crowd cheering me on today and I appreciate that support,” Timpson said. “I gave a great game today so I’m super excited and blessed about that. But overall, just my confidence and doing it for my team.”
Timpson has seen her role expand in her second season with the Fever and has started four straight games. Her scoring has nearly doubled since last season, going from 2.6 to 4.9 points per game, and she is averaging 4.4 rebounds per game this season compared to 1.8 rebounds per game last season.
Fever head coach Stephanie White praised her defensive ability.
“We saw potential for that defensively, the versatility, the way that she can guard, often times we would use her in switches,” White said. “We’ve seen potential in that. But the way the game has slowed down for her, the way that she has just dug into her role and how much more comfortable she feels on the floor because she did the work, this was not something we would’ve thrown at her the first third of the season.”
“The more and more comfortable she’s got, the more and more responsibility we’ve given her, the more and more she’s stepped up and met those expectations,” White added. “It allows us to do a lot of different things. I’m just so incredibly proud of her.”
Timpson’s athleticism was on full display in overtime, converting on an alley-oop layup and another putback layup she made after grabbing the ball out of the air in one smooth motion.
“When we watch film as a team, they tell us, just throw it up to me,” Timpson said. “Anywhere it goes, I’m going to go up and get it. I do everything I can for my team, for sure.”
The Fever look to continue their win streak on Tuesday when they play the Toronto Tempo on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
