INDIANAPOLIS — The Walker Career Center allows students to take part in a variety of programs that can set them on the path to successful employment after they graduate high school, including cosmetology.
During the two-year program students will work between four and five hours a day learning how to do hair, nails, facials, makeup and anything else related to cosmetology.
After they finish 1,500 hours of combined theory and practical skill work, students can get their Indiana state cosmetology license — meaning they're ready to work.
It isn't just a good career path for many students, it also allows them to save a lot of money on their education and training.
"If you go to PJ or a Paul Mitchel, Tricoci, it's $20,000 to $25,000 to get your license. Here, they spend between $650 and $700," said cosmetology instructor Lisa Summeier.
Students also get to work with actual clients while they're practicing in the salon, which allows them to build their communication skills as well. The students perform a variety of services at a fraction of the price you would spend at a normal salon, all while being carefully watched by their instructors.
