Hiring Hoosiers is a new initiative from RTV6 that works to connect Hoosiers to employment opportunities, career development resources, training programs and educational paths. In our Hiring Hoosiers reports we are taking a closer look at barriers to employment and things that get in the way of people getting the jobs they need to support themselves and their families. INDIANAPOLIS — Within the next 10 years, more than 700,000 Hoosiers are expected to leave the workforce. With people living longer lives it means more seniors are looking to find ways to compete in the economy.

Carleen Carter is spending many hours in the computer lab.

"I think the biggest thing is the computer and the language," she said. "I learned it, but it changed so quickly."

Carter is job hunting for something that pays a little more and believes her life experiences will be a plus.

A recent survey found jobs went unfilled statewide because employers could not find people with the right set of skills.

Greg Rippy is retired and has 31 years of experience in leading people in manufacturing.

"I'm worried about them looking at me and saying, 'Well, he's near retirement age so he may not stay with us,'" Rippy said. "I know how to work. I've worked every day out there. I'm a hard worker. I'm dependable."

At Express Employment Professionals, their offices have about 1,000 openings seeking applicants.

"I think employers are looking for good people willing to show up and do the work needed to be done," Mike Heffner, an employment professional, said.

Carter is counting on that.

"I'm going to work until I'm unable to work," she said. "Got to keep the mind active."
