INDIANAPOLIS— The Better Business Bureau issued an alert Friday to watch out for phony text messages that appear to come from your bank.
The fake texts ask you about your password or account status, but clicking on the link may allow the scammers to obtain your banking information.
For example, the website may prompt you to enter your ATM card number and PIN under the guise of malicious software that gives scammers access to anything on the phone, according to the Better Business Bureau.
Here’s what you can do if you get a message, according to the BBB:
- Ignore instructions to text: "STOP" or "NO" to prevent future texts. This is a common ploy by scammers to confirm you have a real, active phone number.
- If you think your text message is real, be sure it's directing to a web address like "yourbank.com" or "yourbank.otherwebsite.com."
- Call the bank or check out their website. If they have been targeted by a scam, your bank may have further information about it.
