INDIANAPOLIS -- A man turned himself in at a Shelbyville truck stop after his stolen truck ran out of gas and he locked himself out of it, according to police.
Robert Lee Starkey Jr. told police that he was on his way to Texas from Pennsylvania following a fight on Monday with his girlfriend.
Starkey said he put their two children and his girlfriend's daughter into her uncle's truck along with a stolen shotgun and some other items and headed towards Kentucky.
Starkey told police that he dropped the kids off in Kentucky and then headed back on the road, but ran out of gas on I-74.
He coasted into the gas station and parked next to an off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer. Starkey told police that his plan was to sell off the shotgun to get gas money but he had locked himself out of the truck and decided at that point to turn himself in.
Starkey said he waited for the officer to come back out to his cruiser and told him what happened. He was taken into custody without incident.
Starkey is charged with auto theft and is being held without bond due to the ongoing investigations against him in Pennsylvania and Kentucky.
