FRANKLIN, Ind. -- An algae advisory is in effect after high levels of blue-green algae was found in multiple Indiana lakes and reservoirs.

Swimming and boating are still permitted in the lakes affected but swimmers should avoid any direct contact with algae and shower after you swim.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources advises keeping pets out of the water during an advisory, or, at a minimum, bathing them immediately after swimming. Pets should also be kept from drinking the water or licking it from their fur.

The following lakes are affected by the advisory:

  • Salamonie Lake
  • Mississinewa Lake
  • Cecil M. Harden Lake (Racoon SRA)
  • Brookeville Lake (Mounds SRA and Quakertown SRA)
  • Whitewater Memorial State Park
  • Chain O’Lakes State Park
  • Potato Creek State Park
  • Hardy Lake

Algae are commonly found in Indiana lakes and streams without concern, however, the concentrated presence of blue-green algae can be linked to some adverse health effects, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

Factors promoting algal growth include sunlight, warm weather, low turbulence, and nutrient sources, such as phosphorus and nitrogen.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Rashes
  • Skin or eye irritation
  • Nausea
  • Stomach aches
  • Tingling fingers or toes

If you should experience any symptoms after swimming, wading, water-skiing or any other water recreational activities, contact your doctor.
