INDIANAPOLIS -- There will be lots of people out and about this Fourth of July, especially at fireworks shows and festivals.

While you should definitely enjoy yourself, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security wants to remind you to be "Ready: Whenever. Wherever."

Dangerous situations can develop at anytime, anywhere, with little or no warning.

That's why it's important to be aware of your surroundings when attending large events.

Locate emergency exits and make sure you know the evacuation plan for the venue.

If you are going somewhere with a group, it's a good idea to pick a place to meet ahead of time in case of an emergency.

Remind children how important it is to stay close and avoid strangers.

If you're going to a fireworks display, always stay a safe distance where they are being set off.

When using sparklers or any smaller fireworks in a crowded area, be mindful of others.
