PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- Hoosier Islamic leaders reacted this week to President Barack Obama's call for American Muslims to help stop the spread of terrorism.
The President said that in the war on ISIS, American Muslim leaders must confront extremist ideology without excuse.
Edgar Hopida, of the Islamic Society of North America, said American Muslims do have their part to play.
"I think that it's a bigger problem in Europe, but we can always improve on what we can do here in America as American Muslims, and one of the things we should do is continue to legitimize what mainstream Islam is all about and delegitimize extremist rhetoric going on between groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda," Hopida said.
The Islamic Society of North America, based in Plainfield, is the largest Islamic organization in the U.S. The group praised the President, who said Sunday night that if we are to succeed in defeating terrorism, we have to enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies.
