INDIANAPOLIS -- A missing 6-year-old boy was found safe Friday night after the SUV he fell asleep in was stolen from the city's north side.

Indianapolis police responded to the 3000 block of N. Delaware Street around 6:20 p.m. for a report of a stolen vehicle with a child inside.

The boy's mother told officers that she left her 2002 white Ford Explorer running with her son asleep inside while she went to get something.  When she came back, the SUV and her son were gone.

Just before 8:30 p.m., the mother got a call that her son and SUV were at the State Fairgrounds near the Pepsi Coliseum.

Police found the 6-year-old boy safe.  They also found the SUV and detained a person of interest a short while later.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say they would like to remind us all that it's not safe to leave your vehicle with your children inside or to leave your vehicle unlocked and running while unattended.
