CUMBERLAND, Ind. — Cumberland police are working with local businesses to come up with a plan to combat violent crime after they've seen a drastic increase in armed robberies in the city over the past year.
Monday’s deadly robbery at the Dollar General was the 27th armed robbery at a Cumberland business in 2018, compared to just 11 armed robberies in 2017 and six in 2016.
Last week, police say two armed robberies took place next door to the Dollar General at Pizza King. They released video of those incidents, which you can watch below.
And back in November, the owner of Handy Spot on East Washington Street say there was an armed robbery inside his store.
Because of the increase in robberies, police say they have been meeting with business owners to talk about what they can do and to offer advice.
- Police offer the following advice to businesses and workers:
- Avoid putting advertisements up that block the entire window so police can see inside
- If there is an armed robbery, do what the robber says
- Be a good witness
- Don't take money to the bank at the same time every night
Police also offer the following rules about how you should conduct yourself if you're ever the victim of an armed robbery while at work:
- Comply and give up the money, it can be replaced - you can't
- Immediately call 911 and get a report in when the robber leaves
- Don't call the managers of the store first
