Contractors complete I-70 west bridge slide in Richmond, Ind. ahead of schedule

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. -- A new bridge 'slid' into place last week in Richmond, Indiana along I-70 west.

Workers from Walsh Construction built the new I-70 bridge in the median over IN 121.

Crews planned a 13-day closure of one lane and shifted another lane to the eastbound side in preparation to remove the old bridge and slide the new one into place.

This same sliding process won a national award when it was used at the border between and Indiana and Kentucky to build a bridge over the Ohio River and then slide it into place to minimize traffic disruptions.

The I-70 project in Richmond is the first time this bridge slide has been tried over land in the state of Indiana. It was scheduled to take 13 days to complete, but was completed a few days ahead of schedule.

Here's a look at a timelapse video from Walsh of the project:

Crews will take the same steps when the work on the bridge on the eastbound side of I-70 begins in October.
