Great Labor Day sales and freebies

You're seeing ads for Labor Day sales just about everywhere. And unlike some other recent sale days (I'm looking at you, Amazon Prime Day), you can find some truly great markdowns this weekend.

But some deals are better than others.

Beds, furniture and appliances

This weekend you'll save big on beds, mattresses and furniture. It's one of the only weekends of the year that Tempur-Pedic goes on sale.

DealNews.com says you'll also save on appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, and washer and dryer sets.

Meantime, we are now in peak summer clearance season. Stores need to make way for Halloween and Christmas displays. So they are clearing out camping gear, grills and patio sets.

Summer clothing and back-to-school items are also on deep markdown, as much as 75 percent off in some cases. Still need a backpack or lunchbox? Buy it this weekend.

What not to buy

But DealNews says there are some things to hold off on during Labor Day weekend, if you can. Wait on iPhones, big-screen HDTVs, toys, and electronics in general.

iPhones will be marked down in a few weeks, when the new iPhones go on sale. And TVs get their biggest markdowns of the year starting in mid-November, for Black Friday. Ditto for game systems.

Great Labor Day freebies

While not the best holiday for free offers, a number of restaurants are still rolling out deals.

Chick-fil-A will be offering free breakfast sandwiches Monday (and through September) if you download the free app from its website.

Burger King will give any laid-off worker (that sort of ties in with Labor Day) a free Whopper with their Whopper Severance package. If you are still employed, you can get a hot dog for $1.

Firehouse Subs has a BOGO on medium subs Monday.

Olive Garden gives you a free meal to take home when you buy one in the restaurant.

Boston Market will give you a whole chicken for just $1.99 with a family meal purchase.

As always, don't waste your money.
