Avoid a broken or otherwise inefficient air conditioning unit by doing just a few simple things throughout the year, according to Jason Ring, general manager of One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning. Here are some of his tips:
1. Change the air filter regularly.
During the summer, change it monthly. Put a reminder on your calendar or phone, so you don’t forget!
2. Install a smart thermostat.
This will allow you to control the temperature of your home even while you’re away. Turning the thermostats back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day can help save as much as 10 percent per year on heating and cooling costs.
3. Seal cooling ducts.
Ensure that the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls and ceiling. These are common locations to find leaks and disconnected ductwork that could be wasting energy and money.
4. Maintain equipment.
Keep the cooling and heating system at peak performance by having a licensed HVAC contractor conduct annual check-ups. Contrary to what some homeowners might think they can handle on their own, most elements of your cooling and heating system are not consumer-serviceable. You must find a professional, and there’s no better time than before summer begins.
5. Have a pro check your A/C
When the weather starts to warm, Ring suggests having your air-conditioning unit examined by a licensed contractor, who will check safety components and consumable parts to ensure they are in working order. The contractor will also check amps on the condenser fan motor and compressor, freon levels, and wash the condenser coil to remove debris.
Before letting any contractor into your home, do your research.
“You need to look for a licensed contractor who has a good reputation, one that does background checks and stands behind their work,” Ring said.
