HENRY COUNTY — A four-year-old boy was ejected from a vehicle following a two-car crash on Interstate 70 in Henry County on Tuesday.
According to a report form the Indiana State Police, it happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 in the area of the 133 mile marker, east of the New Lisbon exit.
Troopers said Jerry Hinton, 29, of Evanston, Ill. was driving east when he lost control of the vehicle while changing from the left to the right lane. The car went into a spin, hit the guardrail on the south side of the road twice before coming to rest in the roadway.
Hinton had just unbuckled his 4-year-old son, Malachai Hinton, from his restraint to check on him when his four-door Chrysler sedan was struck by an eastbound Toyota sport utility vehicle, state police said. The boy was ejected from the sedan into the ditch on the south side of the road, troopers said.
Malachai Hinton was taken by medical helicopter to Riley's Children's Hospital in Indianapolis with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.
A front seat passenger in the Chrysler, Shonnon Hinton, 26, was taken to Reid Health Hospital in Richmond with a leg injury, state police said. Neither Jerry Hinton, nor the driver of the SUV, Patrick Skelly, 61, of Indianapolis, were injured.
The crash resulted in the eastbound lanes of the interstate being restricted to one lane for nearly two hours, causing a several-mile backup at times, troopers said.
