Walt Disney World just keeps upping its game as a go-big-or-go-home food destination. From an over-the-top secret menu hot dog with peanut butter and bacon, just dropped on TikTok, to half-pound cookies commanding 11-hour waits, every time we open Instagram, Disney World shows up with a new trending dish tempting us to ditch those New Year’s resolutions.

Everglazed Donuts & Cold Brew, a new doughnut shop at Disney Springs, Disney World’s shopping, dining and entertainment district, joined the fray Jan. 6 with a menu of elaborate doughnuts piled high with colorful cereals, candy, cookies, frosting and even bacon.

But nothing from Everglazed caught my eye quite like the Grilled Cheeeeeese, an ooey-gooey cheese explosion you can order served on a doughnut.

When I saw my friends at Disney Food Blog share a video of this wild doughnut, I had to try it for myself — and get the scoop from the Everglazed team about how they came up with this decadent creation.

“We knew we wanted a couple of savory sandwiches to compliment the sweet doughnuts, and what’s better than a classic grilled cheese with a twist?” said Everglazed Managing Director Mike Crave. “It’s comfort food, it’s nostalgic, and it’s the king of variations when it comes to sandwiches.”

The original Grilled Cheeeeeese is $6 and comes on a soft, sweet, round bun, which Crave says is similar to King’s Hawaiian bread. But, for an extra dollar, guests can substitute a griddled, glazed doughnut in place of the bun.

“Our chefs grill the sweet bun halves on the cut sides, flip them over and then pile on the cheese — and we mean pile it on,” Crave says. “We use four slices of American cheese — the best for meltability. As the cheese begins to melt, the halves are put together and the sandwich is griddled until the cheese is ready to ooze.”

So, how’d it taste? Luckily, I was starving, because this sammie is rich. It comes out lightning-fast and the thick layer of cheese is, as promised, oozing. Even after heating, the outside of the freshly-made doughnut still keeps its sugary, crisp glaze.

It’s also messy, probably best eaten with a fork and knife, but I had to pull it apart to get a better look at that cheese.

The overall flavor is definitely more sweet than savory, so if you’re in the mood for salty, it’s probably best to get this one on the griddled bun. But, if that salty-sweet combo is your thing, this sandwich hits all the right notes.

On your way to Everglazed’s counter, you can sneak a peek in the kitchen and watch the doughnuts being made. Doughnuts range in price from $4.50 to $5.50, and they are BIG. Other savory sandwiches on the menu include the B&G Burger and the Funky Chicken fried chicken sandwich.

If grilled cheese and Disney are your faves, but you can’t make it to Disney World to try this one, here’s the recipe to make your own three-cheese grilled cheese just like they serve at Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
