INDIANAPOLIS — Firefighters in Indianapolis and across the state are taking the time to remind people today that even though temps have been cold enough to freeze the lakes and rivers, they are not safe to be on.
The polar vortex brought negative temps and wind chills way below zero over the past two days, which means the lakes and ponds look very frozen - but that isn't always the case.
And with the weather break we're getting starting Thursday afternoon that will have temperatures in the 40s and 50s this weekend, those frozen-looking waterways will be even more dangerous.
Check out the reminders below from some of your local emergency departments.
Don’t be fooled by the deep freeze❄️Conditions are still unsafe on all waterways in & around Marion County. #NoIceIsSafeIce
When weather breaks over the next few days☀️Ice integrity will deteriorate rapidly.

Ice on retention ponds is never safe. Even with the sub-zero temperatures, there is a lot going on under the ice. Please remind your family and friends to stay away from the ice. pic.twitter.com/f18yLHR87S
