GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A Greenwood couple got their new puppy from an unusual place - Turkey.

Melia Doucey wanted a rescue dog and her husband Bryan wanted a younger puppy with the mild temperament of a golden retriever.

The Doucey's friend, Becky Minnich, happens to work for the Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Maryland.

"It came to our attention that there's thousands of golden retrievers just running the streets and forests of Turkey, trying to survive. And we heard of other rescues taking some Turkey dogs in, so we jumped on board and we tried it," said Minnich.

It turned out the rescue was taking in a six month old golden from Turkey and the Doucey's were hooked.

"I would definitely recommend it. Not only are you getting a purebred, you are also getting a, rescuing a dog that's not been as fortunate as other puppies," said Doucey.

The golden retriever isone of the top three most popular breeds, according to the American Kennel Club.
