INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Animal Care Services has taken in more than 400 animals in the past week, adding to their already crowded shelter, and they're asking anyone who wants to surrender their animal to make an appointment so they don't get even more overwhelmed.
“We’re not telling people they can’t surrender their animal,” said Laura Keith-Williams, IACS Kennel Manager. “What scheduling allows us to do is anticipate the number of animals coming in to the shelter and better plan how we are going to house them.”
Making an appointment to surrender your animal is not required by IACS, but it does help to cut down on the time you have to wait to be helped and it allows the shelter to plan for the intake and make sure there is room for the animal being surrendered.
Since July 11, IACS has taken in 430 animals, mostly strays.
To make an appointment, call IACS at 317-327-1397 and select option 3. IACS says if someone doesn't answer when you call you can leave a message and one of the staff members will get back with you as soon as possible.
The shelter also says if you pick up an animal as a stray you can file a "found report" with the shelter and they will vaccinate the animal and treat it for fleas if you can keep it for two wees. Along with filing a found report, you will need to report the found animal to Indy Lost Pet Alert. IACS will also post on the found board at the shelter for owners to locate their missing pet.
If you're looking to adopt a new family member, you can visit IACS during their open business hours. For the rest of July, IACS is waiving adoption fees with a $10 donation (supplies or cash).
