Just when you thought Lay’s had already outdone themselves with potato chip flavors like fried pickles with ranch, they’re back to prove they are not done experimenting.

And this time, they’re taking on a classic comfort food just in time for cooler weather — when we need all the comforting and cozy flavors we can get. Say hello to their newest flavor: grilled cheese and tomato soup.

The new grilled cheese and tomato soup chips feature a combination of tomato and buttery cheese tastes, with a hint of toasted flavor for the ultimate grilled cheese and tomato soup experience. No dunking required!

The new chips will begin hitting shelves Oct. 21, costing around $3.49 for a 7.75-ounce bag. They’ll only be available for a limited time, so you’ll want to make sure you try them before they’re gone.

I was able to sample them ahead of their release and have to say, I am thoroughly impressed. Some food mash-ups miss the mark a bit (looking at you, cookie-flavored candy corn), but these actually taste like both tomato soup and grilled cheese.

I put plain potato chips in my tomato soup because I love the saltiness combined with the tanginess of the tomato, so I wasn’t surprised I liked them — just surprised at how good they are. You can taste the tomato flavor first, followed by the cheese and a bit of a toasted flavor. The tomato flavor was just enough to not be overpowering, but it was a bit stronger than the cheese.

I have not tried putting the chips in tomato soup yet, but trust me, the next time I make grilled cheese and tomato soup in my kitchen, they’ll be going in.

The launch of the newest flavored chip coincides with a new Gotta Have Lay’s campaign that will give you a chance to win free Lay’s for a year. Beginning Oct. 21, just head to their website and upload a photo of yourself with their new packaging design. While odds of winning depend on the number of people who enter, there will be 200 winners total, so you definitely have a chance.

As I mentioned, this is far from the first interesting flavor Lay’s has released in recent years. We’ve seen everything from Szechuan chicken, tikka masala and Greek tzatziki to flamin’ hot dill pickle.

Other brands have gotten in on the act, too. Kettle Brand chips released a bloody mary flavor back in 2017, and Ruffles (another Frito-Lay brand) had a Mozzarella ‘N Marinara flavor early last year. And Pringles tested Thanksgiving-flavored chips a few years back.
