Fall foliage has officially started here in the United States, and Roadtrippers has created a gorgeous map to show where and when to see the autumn colors.

Leaves are changing in Vermont, and other areas will begin seeing the same soon.

Vermont's color change begins to crop up in mid-September and typically ends in mid- to late October, Roadtrippers says.

The most varied and longest-lasting fall colors may be seen in Appalachia, where a dozen or more types of trees will change at different times, which is what stretches the fall foliage season there.

The colors are a byproduct of chemical changes that occur as a tree begins to go dormant.
