INDIANAPOLIS -- Some people who use insulin made by Eli Lilly and Company will be able to buy it for a discounted price starting January 1, 2017, according to an announcement made Tuesday.

People who pay full price for most Lilly insulins may save 40 percent, such as those who don't have insurance or who haven't met their deductible so they have to pay most or all of the retail price.

Using an app or the Blink Health website, people will enter the dosages and quantity of Lilly insulin that matches their prescription.

The discounted cost will be paid for online and the prescription can be picked up at most pharmacies including Walgreens, CVS, Target, RiteAid, Safeway and Kroger.

People whose prescription claims are reimbursed by any government program aren't eligible for the Lilly discount.

The Lilly announcement comes on the heels of criticism against the company from Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Similar tweets from Sanders sent Lilly's stock down more than one percent.

According to the Washington Post, Sanders and Rep. Elijah Cummings requested a Justice Department investigation into possible collusion between drug companies that make insulin.
