FISHERS — Unplug Soy Candles in Fishers was filled with customers on Black Friday. Each one looking to support a local business.

“We are shopping local,” Patricia Freund said. “We are heading here to make some candles for the grandparents and then heading over to Carmel and downtown Fishers to do some more local shopping.”

Freund’s husband is a local business owner. She says that’s why she understands how important it is to support small businesses.

“Pandemic or not, but this year especially, it seems like a lot of local businesses could really use a boost. There’s no better time with them when you’re out gift shopping for the holidays,” Freund said.

Jane Shea just discovered Unplug Soy Candles last week. She loved the store so much that she brought her daughter in who is visiting Fishers from Nashville. "I told her about this amazing store, making our own candles, I love candles!” Shea said.

Jennifer Sturgill and her husband own the store. Their original location for four years was in Fortville. In January, they bought their new Fishers location and relocated to Promise Creek Lane over the summer.

"We did a full build out during COVID, opened here in July 2020,” Sturgill said. "It was nerve-racking and took a little bit longer for permits and all the fun stuff, but it was a good time to pivot our business and put a lot of focus into a retail experience would be for customers.”

Sturgill said seeing her store filled with customers looking to support her business on Black Friday was amazing. “Customers have been with us since we started selling at the Noblesville Farmers Market,” she said. To now see them come in and enjoy our brand-new shop with their friends and family and safely pour candles & have something to do when they could choose to go anywhere else it’s fantastic.”

On Small Business Saturday, Unplug Soy Candles is having its biggest sale of the year. The city of Fishers has launched a website to help people support local businesses.

From November 28th through December 31st, Shop Fishers invites the community to shop and dine local while enjoying special deals and promotions at over 60 businesses throughout the city. Click here to see the deals.
