FOUNTAIN COUNTY — The risers were pulled out as students filed into the gym. Covington Elementary is not far from the city's park.

It wasn't a safe place - rust and old age made some of the equipment risky for kids and their families.

The decision to replace, rebuild and renovate wasn't going to be cheap. The city faced a bill of more than $700,000. But, what this community lacks in economic power it quickly makes up in the riches of enthusiasm and pride.

Amanda Strawser led the charge, holding many fundraisers, and organizing neighbors who helped win a state grant to restore their park.

Watch the story of Strawser - RTV6's Jefferson Award winner for March - in the video above.
