When you think of stained glass, you probably picture a church or some other ancient structure. Well, what’s old is new again because stained glass is becoming one of the hottest design trends of 2020.

Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s in-house trend expert, told Martha Stewart there’s been a 127% increase in searches for stained-glass crafts and supplies on their site.

And it makes sense. The effect of sunlight streaming through colorful stained glass is visually stunning. It’s only natural that this aesthetic would stand the test of time. This recent work from @color_therapy_glass feels both old and new at the same time:

And these stained glass panels in front of a window in a recording studio in Asheville, North Carolina, lend a fun and artsy vibe, as demonstrated on Instagram by @fluxglass:

How can you get in on this trend?

There are tons of artists selling their wares on sites like Etsy, or you could always take a stab at making your own stained glass. Etsy sells premade kits, like this one, which contains a grinder, a soldering iron, various colored panes of glass and more.

And if you’d like to learn the different techniques that exist for creating stained glass — including traditional lead work or the kiln method — you could always look for a workshop at your local community college or stained glass shop in order to learn the basics. Artists say the process is not as difficult as you might think!

“I love that you can have an idea and produce a finished piece in one day, which is pretty much impossible in most other glass practices,” Lesley Green, owner and stained glass artist at Bespoke, told Martha Stewart. “That’s immensely gratifying.”
