HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- Many kids look forward to summer vacation - a time when children are supposed to be carefree, going to the pool and spending time with family.
However, for some Hamilton County students, summer brings with it a major concern...they don't have enough food at home.
On Saturday, you can help children and families in need.
Law enforcement agencies around Hamilton County are partnering with all of the Kroger stores in the county for an event called, "Pack the Cruiser". You are asked to help fill police cruisers with food donations at Kroger stores. The food collected will go to help each school district's summer meal program.
Food insecurity is a growing problem in Hamilton County. According to the Fishers Police Department, last year 187 students took park in Hamilton Southeastern Schools' summer meal program. This year, that number is well above 500 students.
Last year, people donated enough food to fill 11 Fishers Police Department cruisers. This year, you can donate to the "Pack the Cruiser" program at all nine Kroger stores within Hamilton County.
"Pack the Cruiser" is Saturday, June 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
