HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. -- A Brownsburg taxidermy owner was released from the Hendricks County jail Wednesday following his initial court hearing, in which he pleaded not guilty to stealing from his customers.
Kevin McGrotty was released on his own recognizance, according to the court bailiff.
The judge set another court date for November 2 at 9 a.m.
McGrotty was charged with 16 counts of theft and 1 count of corrupt business influence.
The taxidermist told the judge he plans to hire his own attorney rather than use a public defender.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office and the Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office served search and arrest warrants Tuesday at Brownsburg Taxidermy on State Road 267.
McGrotty’s arrest comes just months after Call 6 Investigates questioned McGrotty about why multiple customers claimed the taxidermist took their money and didn’t do the work promised.

McGrotty told Call 6 Investigates he had been suffering from health and personal problems, but planned to finish outstanding orders before closing in the fall of 2017.
Call 6 Investigates called and emailed McGrotty Wednesday but he has not yet responded.
“I plan to file for bankruptcy, and I’m sending out letters to my customers letting them know what’s going on,” said McGrotty in April. “Everyone has their panties in a wad, but I’m struggling. I’m working every day to get caught up.”
Records show at least 10 complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau, earning the company an F grade.
The DNR has pulled his taxidermy license, so he will be unable to complete his customers’ orders.
