CALL 6: Car collector challenges postal insurance denial after package lost

Posted

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – A man who paid money extra for postal insurance was initially left without a package or a payout once the item was lost in the delivery process.

When Michael Bowman mailed his truck’s super charger to a vendor in Iowa, he thought the process would run smoothly.

“My expectation was to send to him and have it back in a week so I could sell my truck,” said Bowman.

He said he paid an extra $26 to obtain an insurance policy worth $2,000 if the item was lost. The package never arrived in Iowa.

When Bowman filed a claim with the postal service to receive the $2,000 from the insurance policy, it was denied as "insufficient" and that the "claim must be supported by acceptable proof of value."

“They said it was in a recovery center in Iowa but no supercharger,” said Bowman. "I don't know what insurance is for if they are not going to back it up.”

Soon after Call 6 Investigates reached out to the postal service asking for a review, Bowman received a check for $1,670.11.

It’s recommended for people to declare the accurate value of an item before the shipping process.

Photos or video of how the item was packaged could serve as proof in the event a claim needs to be filed.
