Muncie RR crossing one of most dangerous in US

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A railroad crossing near the Muncie Mall is one of the most dangerous in the country, according to newly released statistics by the Federal Railroad Administration.

Muncie’s busy railroad crossing near the intersection at McGalliard Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. is the nation’s seventh most dangerous, according to the list. Over the past 10 years, the intersection saw 14 incidents with three injuries. None of those incidents resulted in fatalities.

The FRA compiles data of all incidents at the country’s more than 200,000 railroad crossings. This week, the FRA released a list of the top 15 crossings across the United States where the most incidents have occurred over the last decade.

“Knowing where repeat injuries and fatalities occur helps states focus their time and resources on areas where they can have an impact,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Preventing incidents and fatalities at railroad crossings is one of the Department’s top priorities, and I urge states to work with FRA to achieve this life-saving goal.”

The crossing is owned and maintained by Norfolk Southern railroad. Call 6 Investigates has reached out to the railroad, but as of Friday morning has not yet heard back.
