INDIANAPOLIS -- Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are growing in popularity, but they can come with danger.
CFL bulbs are good for your wallet. They not only use less energy, but also last about 5 years.
It’s when they start to burn out that causes problems. Some bulbs don't just die quietly – they start smoking.
When CFL bulbs go out they start to dim, then produce a dramatic pop, emit a distinct odor and maybe even release smoke.
If it happens to you, first turn off the light switch and let the bulb cool down. Then remove the bulb, but down turn it by the glass.
The bulbs do contain mercury, so they can't go into the trash. Instead, take them to recycling centers or your local hardware store and drop them off there.
