IMPD: Gangs & drugs not only causes of violence

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- From murders to shootings, Indianapolis has dealt with a rash of violence over the past week – but what's causing it?

While IMPD says some of the violence does come from gangs and drugs, they aren't the only source of it.

One of the big sources of violence: Simply arguments escalating too far. Another one: Thefts.

Just last Wednesday, a person was killed on East Market Street over a video game console.

According to police, a group of people went to confront another group about a stolen Playstation and television. Police say they started arguing and then shots rang out and the victim, 23-year-old Deandre Johnson, was struck in the back.

By comparison, at this point in 2015 the city had 87 homicides.

Police say gang violence is often the hardest to investigate because victims and witnesses are unwilling to speak up.
